Choosing to study at an American university offers a wealth of opportunities. From world-class academic programs to diverse campus life, the US is a top destination for international students. Here are six compelling reasons why studying in the US can shape your future!

  1. American Uni’s have world-leading tech and academia – While top universities can be found worldwide, including the UK, the US boasts the highest number of globally ranked institutions, offering exceptional research opportunities that are hard to beat. Further to this, Universities in the US often invest more than their international peers on their facilities, providing state-of-the-art libraries, laboratories and sports centres, enhancing the overall student experience. The US is known for its cutting-edge research and innovation, offering students access to significant research projects and resources in various fields. Often at US universities, excelling undergraduate and post-graduate students are able to use university resources to produce publications.

  1. Diverse Academic Programs, more subjects, plus you get an extra year! – American degrees (like many Scottish ones) are generally four years long. This gives you one extra year of student life. Plus, they give you the chance to study a range of subjects before majoring in one. Higher education in the US also offers more degree options, as well as the ability to change your degree subject in the early stages, allowing you to find your specific interest and passion for your studies.

  1. American degrees will often improve your job prospects – Studying as an International Student in the US definitely has the potential to expand your future career opportunities! Studying abroad will set you apart from vast numbers of applicants and is often considered valuable to UK and Global employers. Studying abroad shows that you're driven, willing to take risks and able to adapt to a new culture. That's a definite way to set yourself apart from other applicants!

Additionally, there are strong alumni networks within American colleges, helping you to meet potential employers during and after your degree. American unis are also big on career fairs, where top employers are looking for the best students and graduates.

  1. Campus life in American universities! – The University experience in the US will be vastly different to your UK options. There's quite a different drinking culture in the US as their legal drinking age is 21. You'll also likely have to share a room with another student. Americans love their organised fun.. with sports teams at all levels from almost professional university teams to fun internal university leagues, social clubs for just about everything you can think of and not to forget the fraternity and sorority experience (we know you’ve seen the movies, Yes, it’s like that!).

  1. Experience American culture – Studying in America is an amazing chance to explore a new continent and culture. If you want to go out and see the world, this could be the ideal time for you to do so. Additionally, your studies will allow you to gain a global perspective and expand your global network.

  2. The ability to work and live in the USA - International Students who graduate from US universities can often gain employment opportunities in the US immediately after their study. With the F1 Student Visa you will be able to apply for an OPT (optional practical training) extension which will allow you to work in the USA for 1 year (and up to 3 years if you study a STEM degree). From there, you can explore visas if you’d like to stay longer with a qualified employer and you could take this path all the way to a green card and residency.
